Proverbs 29:18 says “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” I have often heard Pastors, Teachers and Leaders reference this scripture and talk about “casting a vision”. I want to tell you today as a local church we don’t need any more “vision” about our mission than Jesus gave us in Matthew 28:19&20. Jesus said go preach the Gospel, Baptize those who believe and disciple them! Pretty clear wouldn’t you agree?
It’s true the Holy Spirit will use different believers to reach various groups of people in different ways. That being said we should never confuse effective ideas or methods of outreach with “vision”.
The overlooked 2nd half of Proverbs 29:18 says “but he that keepeth the law, happy is he”. What a change of message when this verse is put in context. You see the perishing who “have no vision” don't know God's word and therefore simply can’t see! If I tried to walk across the Greene County in utter darkness I would fall off a steep ledge or step into deep water that was over my head or just trip and break my neck. No matter the specific peril I’d encounter death. I would “perish”. The reason “he that keepeth the law” is happy is because The Law is a Light. Yes, yes, yes! Ps. 119:105 says “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path”. Gods’ word gives direction. Obeying Gods directions keeps us from “perishing”. Obeying Gods word keeps us from taking steps that bring death and destruction into our lives.
Choose life! Fill yourself with the word so you can see clearly and live. Read your Bible Everyday , do what it says and you’ll walk happily in the light.
